EPRI Report on Application of Biocriteria: Section 316(b) Clean Water Act

Conducted by Langhei Ecology for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), this study investigates the suitability of biocriteria for addressing potential impacts from cooling water intake structures (CWIS) due to entrainment or impingement of aquatic organisms. EPA is currently promulgating regulations to implement Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act, which requires CWIS facilities to minimize impacts related to entrainment and impingement. The report includes discussions of general issues related to the application of multi-metric biocriteria in a regulatory setting, as well as issues specific to Section 316(b).
